Railway News: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the doubling of the 177 km Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat railway line. The project aims to enhance railway connectivity across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal at an estimated cost of Rs 3,169 crore.

“The enhanced line capacity will improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. The multi-tracking proposal will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing the much-required infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways,” the government press release read.

- The project aligns with PM Modi’s vision of a New India, focusing on improved infrastructure and regional development.

- The Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat railway line project will add approximately 177 km of railway line to the Indian Railways network, covering five districts across Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

- The additional railway line will boost pilgrimage by improving access to key religious destinations across three states, including Deoghar (Baba Baidyanath Dham) and Tarapith (Shakti Peeth).

- The doubling of the Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat railway line will improve connectivity for 441 villages, impacting a population of approximately 28.72 lakh, Banka (Bihar), Godda (Jharkhand) and Dumka (Jharkhand).

- The route is vital for transporting key commodities such as coal, cement, fertilisers and bricks and stones.

- The project is a part of Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on multi-modal connectivity, logistics efficiency and integrated planning through stakeholder consultations.

- The project aims to drive comprehensive regional development while creating employment and self-employment opportunities.

“The railways, being an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient mode of transportation, will help both in achieving climate goals and minimising logistics costs for the country, reduce oil imports (by 5 crore litres), and lower CO2 emissions (by 24 crore kg), which is equivalent to the plantation of 1 crore trees,” the statement added.
