Bihar Elections 2025: As Bihar prepares for the first phase of Assembly elections on November 6, all eyes are on major contenders from Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav to Tej Pratap, Samrat Choudhary, Maithili Thakur, and others. This phase will see voting in 121 assembly seats across the state.
The Bihar Assembly elections 2025 are anticipated to be a battle primarily between two alliances: The NDA and Mahagathbandhan. However, Prashant Kishore's Jan Suraj has added a new dimension to the contest. The NDA comprises the BJP, Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha. The Grand Alliance includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, VIP, CPI, CPI-ML, and CPI(M), who are contesting together.
According to Election Commission data, 1,314 candidates are in the fray for this first phase.
Bihar Elections 2025: Key Candidates In Phase 1 Election
1. Tejashwi Yadav : Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face Tejashwi Yadav is contesting from his family stronghold, Raghopur. He faces BJP’s Satish Kumar, who had defeated his mother, Rabri Devi, in 2010 by a margin of 13,000 votes. Tejashwi later avenged that loss with victories in 2015 and 2020, winning the last election by over 38,000 votes. The Raghopur seat was previously won by Lalu Prasad in 1995 and 2000, before Rabri represented it in 2005.
2. Tej Pratap Yadav: Former RJD leader Tej Pratap Yadav, son of Lalu Yadav, who launched his own political outfit ahead of Bihar Assembly polls, will contest from the Mahua seat. Facing stiff competition from RJD’s incumbent MLA Mukesh Kumar Raushan and LJP (Ram Vilas) candidate Sanjay Kumar, Tej Pratap enters a high-stakes battle in Mahua, a constituency long considered an RJD stronghold and expected to witness one of the most intense contests in the elections.
3. Samrat Choudhary: Deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary is contesting from the Tarapur constituency, which has been a JD(U) stronghold over the past two decades. Interestingly, Shakuni Choudhary, father of Samrat Choudhary had won Tarapur twice, first as an Independent and later after joining Congress in the 1990 Bihar Assembly election.
4. Maithili Thakur: Folk singer and BJP leader Maithili Thakur will contest from Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga. She is up against RJD’s Binod Mishra and Biplaw Kumar Chowdhary from Jan Suraaj. In the 2020 elections, Vikassheel Insaan Party’s Mishri Lal Yadav narrowly defeated Binod Mishra by 3,101 votes, while in 2015, senior RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui had won the seat.
5. Vijay Kumar Sinha: Vijay Kumar Sinha is set to defend the Lakhisarai assembly constituency after winning it in the past three Assembly elections in 2010, 2015, and 2020. His repeated victories helped him rise through the ranks, serving first as Bihar Assembly speaker and later as the state’s deputy chief minister.
6. Umesh Kushwaha: JD(U) state unit chief Umesh Kushwaha has been nominated from Mahnar. The seat was won by RJD’s Bina Singh in 2020, whereas Kushwaha had secured it in 2015.
7. Nitin Nabin: Minister of Road Construction of Bihar and prominent young BJP leader Nitin Nabin is once again fielded from the Bankipur seat in Patna district for the Fifth time. He has represented the constituency successfully for the last three consecutive terms. He is the son of veteran BJP leader Nabin Kishore Sinha. He won with approx 84,000 votes in 2020 Bihar Legislative Elections. In the last election he defeated Luv Sinha, son of Shatrughan Sinha by a huge margin.
8. KC Sinha: Contesting Bihar polls for the first time, professor and author Krishna Chandra Sinha has been fielded by Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj party from Kumhrar Vidhan Sabha seat. He has served as vice chancellor of several universities in Bihar, including Patna University, Nalanda Open University, and Magadh University, and has received awards such as 'Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Shiksha Puraskar' and 'Icons of Bihar'.
