Vijay Kumar Choudhary Profile: With just two days left for the first phase of voting in the Bihar Assembly Election 2025, all political parties are campaigning vigorously to win over voters. One seat that promises an interesting contest is the Sarairanjan Vidhan Sabha seat. Interestingly, JD(U) leader Vijay Kumar Choudhary has been representing this seat since 2010, maintaining a stronghold for over a decade and a half.

Over the years, the Sarairanjan Assembly constituency has seen close contests, yet it has largely remained a bastion of Vijay Kumar Choudhary. Given his consistent performance, the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) has once again placed its trust in him for this election.

The big question now is can Choudhary retain his dominance in Sarairanjan?

Who Is Vijay Kumar Choudhary of JD(U)?

Vijay Kumar Choudhary, born on January 8, 1957 (age 68), is a veteran Indian politician from the Janata Dal (United). He currently serves as the Cabinet Minister for Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs in the Bihar government. Representing the Sarairanjan constituency, he hails from Dalsinghsarai in Samastipur district and belongs to a Bhumihar family.

A five-time MLA and senior leader, Vijay Kumar Choudhary has had a long and distinguished political career. He has previously held several key positions, including Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, and ministerial roles in the Education, Building Construction, Transport, and Information and Public Relations departments.

Vijay Kumar Choudhary: Education, Family, and Net Worth

As per official records, Vijay Kumar Choudhary completed his master’s degree in History from Patna University in 1979. The same year, he joined the State Bank of India as a probationary officer in Trivandrum. His total declared assets are worth over Rs 3.17 crore, and he has no criminal cases against him.

He is married to Ganga Choudhary, and the couple has a son and a daughter.

Vijay Kumar Choudhary: Know Political Journey, Background

Choudhary comes from a politically active family. His father, Jagdish Prasad Choudhary, was a freedom fighter and a Congress leader who served three terms as MLA from the Dalsinghsarai constituency.

After his father’s demise in 1982, Vijay Kumar Choudhary resigned from his banking job and successfully contested the by-election from Dalsinghsarai on a Congress ticket. He retained the seat in 1985 and 1990, and during his tenure (1982–1995), he served as Deputy Chairman of the Bihar State Industrial Development Corporation (BSIDC) and Deputy Chief Whip of the Congress Legislature Party.

Though he lost the 1995 and 2000 assembly elections, he remained active in the Congress party as General Secretary of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee until 2005.

In 2005, he joined JD(U) and contested from Sarairanjan but lost. Three years later, in 2008, he was appointed General Secretary and Chief Spokesperson of the JD(U). In 2010, he became the President of Bihar JD(U) and led the party to victory in the Bihar Assembly Elections.

That year, he won from Sarairanjan by a margin of 17,557 votes and was inducted as the Water Resources Minister on November 26, 2010. Since then, Choudhary has successfully retained the Sarairanjan seat in 2010, 2015, and 2020, establishing himself as one of JD(U)’s most consistent performers.

Sarairanjan Assembly Constituency Overview

The Sarairanjan Assembly constituency (Constituency No. 136) is located in Samastipur district and is a general seat, not reserved for SC or ST candidates. It falls under the Ujiarpur Lok Sabha constituency.

In the 2020 Bihar Assembly Elections, Vijay Kumar Choudhary of JD(U) defeated RJD’s Arbind Kumar Sahni by a margin of 3,624 votes. The voter turnout stood at 60.86 per cent , indicating significant public participation.
Earlier, in the 2015 elections, Choudhary had secured 81,055 votes (53.23 per cent ), defeating BJP candidate Ranjeet Nirguni, who received 47,011 votes (30.87 per cent ). JD(U)’s continuous victories in 2010, 2015, and 2020 highlight its dominance in this constituency.

Bihar Election 2025: What to Expect From Sarairanjan Seat?

For the 2025 Bihar Assembly Election, the Mahagathbandhan has once again fielded RJD leader Arbind Kumar Sahni from the Sarairanjan seat, despite his defeat to Vijay Kumar Choudhary in 2020 who has been consistently winning this seat since 2010.

However, the contest is likely to be triangular this time, with Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) also entering the race by fielding Sajan Kumar Mishra as its candidate.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled voting on November 6, 2025, for the Sarairanjan constituency as part of Phase 1 of the Bihar Assembly polls.
