Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: Amid his ongoing campaign rallies for the Bihar elections, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday joined locals in a traditional fish-catching activity in Begusarai.

He jumped into a pond to take part in the activity, where he was accompanied by former state minister Mukesh Sahni of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), a junior partner in the INDIA bloc. Gandhi reached the centre of the pond by boat before joining the fish-catching. Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar was also present during the activity.

Rahul Gandhi Goes Fishing With Locals In Begusarai

The Congress leader, dressed in his trademark white T-shirt and black trousers, stepped into the pond and was seen swimming in freestyle strokes. He was accompanied by Sahani, dressed down to a vest and underpants, who cast a fishing net as Rahul Gandhi watched with interest.

A large number of fishermen were present at the site, with some joining leaders in the waist-deep water. The video, shared by the Congress on X (formerly Twitter), has since gone viral on social media.

Sharing the post on X, Congress wrote, “Leader of the Opposition Shri discussed the challenges and struggles related to the work of fishermen companions while engaging in fishing in Begusarai. During this time, VIP party founder Shri @sonofmallah was also present.”

The X post also mentioned the INDIA bloc’s election promises, including an insurance scheme for those engaged in pisciculture and financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to families of fishermen during the three-month ban period on fishing.

The alliance has also pledged to implement a fisheries insurance scheme and improve market access for the community. It has proposed setting up markets, training centres, and subsidy schemes in every block.

“Under a consistent reservoir policy, rivers and ponds will be rejuvenated and traditional fishermen will be given priority in allocation,” the post added.

Gandhi Voices Support For Fishermen

The Lok Sabha leader said that fishermen form an important part of Bihar’s economy and assured them of his full support.

In a post on X, Gandhi wrote, "It felt great to meet the fishermen community in Begusarai, Bihar, today with Mukesh Sahni ji, the president of VIP party. Their work is as interesting as the problems and struggles associated with it are serious. However, their hard work, passion, and deep understanding of the business in every situation is inspiring. The rivers, canals, ponds of Bihar and the fishermen who inhabit them are an important part of the state's economy. I stand with them at every step for their rights and respect.”
