The entire opposition in Bihar, led by the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan), has come together to protest the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, alleging it is being done at the behest of the ruling BJP to suppress the voting rights of marginalised sections.
Addressing a press conference at the State Congress Headquarters (Sadakat Ashram) on Sunday, Congress State President Rajesh Ram accused the Election Commission of attempting to "snatch the constitutional right to vote." He announced that all parties of the Grand Alliance, including Congress, RJD, and the Left, will stage a statewide road blockade (chakka jam) on July 9.
He further warned that if their demands are not addressed by the Commission, the opposition will call for a Bihar Bandh (statewide shutdown) as the next phase of protest.
Earlier, RJD leader and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav had announced the July 9 chakka jam during a Facebook Live session, calling the voter list revision a "conspiracy to disenfranchise the poor and backward communities." The Left parties and Purnea MP Pappu Yadav have also extended their support to the agitation.
Adding momentum to the protest, Congress sources have indicated that former party president Rahul Gandhi is likely to visit Patna on July 9 to participate in the road blockade. Though not officially confirmed, the development highlights the Grand Alliance’s growing pushback ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025.
