The Bihar government has approved an allocation of approximately Rs 250 crore under the ongoing scheme to provide free medicines to patients in government hospitals. A total of Rs 136.91 crore has been released for medical college hospitals and other medical educational institutions for the fiscal year 2025-26.
In addition, Rs 90 crore have been allocated to district and sub divisional hospitals, and Rs 23.08 crore have been sanctioned for community health centres. According to the health department, along with approving the funds for medicines, the department has also issued guidelines for their procurement. 70 per cent of the amount sanctioned for medical college hospitals will be spent at the level of the Bihar Health Services Infrastructure Corporation, which will procure the medicines.
The remaining 30 per cent will allow medical college hospitals to purchase medicines from the local market. On the other hand, 80 per cent of the funds allocated to district hospitals will be utilised by the Bihar Health Services Infrastructure Corporation, while civil surgeons will be able to procure medicines with the remaining 20 per cent.
