To prevent incidents of theft and burglary involving important land records, the Bihar government has initiated the installation of CCTV cameras across all 140 registration offices in the state. In addition to surveillance, private security guards will be deployed in two shifts to enhance the security of sensitive documents and ensure transparency in the registration process.
According to the Department of Prohibition, Excise and Registration, the move follows recent incidents of theft and attempted break-ins at record archives in some offices. So far, CCTV installation has been completed in 88 registration offices, with work underway in the remaining 60. Surveillance systems have already been activated in 75 key offices, including those in Patna.
Cameras are also being installed in the offices of nine Assistant Registration Inspectors General to monitor and streamline operations.
Given the presence of large numbers of people in registration offices and frequent cash transactions between parties, the department is also focusing on physical security. The government has increased the number of security personnel in both district and sub-registrar offices.
Previously, only two guards were deployed, making round-the-clock monitoring unfeasible. Now, five private guards will be stationed at district-level offices and three at sub-registrar offices to ensure continuous coverage.
Additionally, all registration offices have been instructed to undergo a fire safety audit, and fire extinguishers will be installed where necessary to prevent potential fire-related incidents.
