The Bihar government plans to construct vegetable centres on 10,000 sq ft of land in each of the state’s 534 blocks, with an estimated cost of Rs 96 lakh to Rs 1 crore per centre.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Co-operative Department, aims to be completed within the next two years, providing farmers with advanced storage and marketing facilities for their produce.

Each centre will include a 10-tonne cold storage unit, a 20-tonne capacity warehouse, a vegetable collection centre, and a shed for sorting and packaging. Land for the projects will be provided by the Agriculture Department.
The Co-operative Department also plans to establish similar centres in all panchayats, based on the block-level model, with a proposal ready to be sent to the state cabinet for approval.
In a bid to promote organic vegetable production, the department, in collaboration with the Agriculture Department, will provide subsidies for organic farming. The move comes amid growing demand for organic vegetables in international markets.
Last month, a consignment of organic vegetables was exported from Bihta Airport to Bangkok and Dubai, showcasing the state’s potential in the organic vegetable sector.
