The Bihar government is set to launch a new initiative linking the maintenance of bridges up to 60 meters in length with regular road maintenance work. The Road Construction Department is currently preparing estimates for the new package-based system, which is expected to begin after November.

According to departmental sources, around 15,000 such bridges exist across the state. Under the upcoming system, at least 100 bridges will be included in each package, with a focus on those located along state highways.

Unlike the current practice, which limits repairs to surface-level issues, the new approach will include thorough structural assessments and maintenance of bridge components. The project is part of the state’s updated road maintenance policy and aims to ensure long-term structural safety.

Agreements with construction companies will be executed at the divisional level and will include detailed "health reports" of each bridge. These reports will identify any defects which must be addressed by the contracted firm.

The responsible construction company will be accountable for the ongoing maintenance of the assigned bridges for a specified period, ensuring improved infrastructure management across the state.
