In view of the rising temperatures, the Department of Animal and Fishery Resources, Bihar, has issued essential guidelines for fish farmers for May. According to experts, special attention needs to be paid to fish health and pond management due to the increase in temperature and humidity in May.
The department has advised in its guidelines that it is necessary to provide a balanced diet for the health and development of fish this month. Especially give supplementary feed in the right quantity, quality, and on time. Harvest fish for sale when they weigh 1-1.5 kg. Stop feeding a day before harvesting so that the digestive system remains clean.
Maintaining oxygen levels in the pond water is especially crucial this month. Therefore, do not add cow dung and lime together, as this can affect water quality. Excessive heat and rain can lead to oxygen depletion. To avoid this, spray SSP or DAP as needed or use an aerator. If the water turns green, stop using lime and chemical fertilisers for 15 days to a month.
May is the right time for fish seed producers to start breeding silver carp. For this, first dry the nursery pond and add cow dung (1000-2000 kg/acre) and lime (50 kg/acre), then fill it with water and stock at the rate of 2 million spawn per acre. It is important to note that fish seed should always be transported in a cool environment. The right time to release fish seed (fingerlings/yearlings) into the pond is between 8 am and 12 pm, as the temperature is favorable during this time.
Sudden rainfall in May can affect the pond water. For this, add 15-20 kg of lime per acre to the pond after rainfall to keep the pH of the water balanced. If there is heavy rainfall, arrange for proper drainage around the pond.
According to the Department of Animal and Fishery Resources, fish farmers should pay special attention to pond management, feed control, and fish seed production in May. By taking proper care and following scientific techniques, fish production can be increased and economic benefits can be obtained.
