The arrest of Purnia MP Pappu Yadav in Patna for the 1995 Forgery case has raised the political temperature in Bihar. The situation has become even more tense due to the deteriorating health of the MP. Following the arrest, the police first took the MP to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) at night. He was then shifted to the Patna Medical College hospital.

Pappu Yadav’s personal secretary wrote on his official Facebook profile, "Patna Police placed the Honourable MP on a stretcher for treatment. Patna Police couldn't even get him a bed at IGIMS. This is the state of Bihar's healthcare system." The secretary further wrote that the MP was left overnight on a stretcher at the IGIMS. Condemning the arrest as a political vendetta, the post alleged that the government and police acted only because Yadav had challenged their "serious lapses" in the NEET aspirant’s case.

The Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Rahul Gandhi, has also come in support of Pappu Yadav and remarked that the arrest by the police is politically motivated to push the suspicious death of a NEET aspirant under the carpet.

“My fellow MP, Pappu Yadav, stood firmly as a voice for justice for this young woman. His arrest today is clearly an act of political vendetta, aimed at intimidating and silencing every voice that demands accountability,” Gandhi wrote on his official Facebook id.

The Congress politician further said that the arrest of Yadav is not an isolated case but a sinister political conspiracy where more daughters are becoming victims, and those in power are turning a blind eye to this horrific reality.

Meanwhile, Congress politician Priyanka Gandhi slammed the government for supporting the accused in all the cases rather than taking stringent actions against the culprits. "From Hathras and Unnao to Ankita Bhandari and Patna, wherever atrocities are committed against women, BJP governments, instead of ensuring justice for the victims, stand with the accused. The arrest of MP Pappu Yadav, who raised his voice in this case, is yet another example of this insensitive attitude," she wrote.

Why Was Pappu Yadav Arrested?

Pappu Yadav was arrested by the police in connection with a 1995 forgery case that involved a dispute over a property with the owner, Vinod Bihari Lal. Lal alleged that his house was rented out using fictitious papers for private use. But it later became the office of a Member of Parliament.

A case was registered at the Gardanibagh police station against Yadav for forging the papers and violating the rules of the agreement. The Purnea MP was charged with Sections 467 (forgery of valuable security/will), 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 448 (house-trespass), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. The case is currently under trial in the MP-MLA Special Court.

Currently, the MP is admitted at the PMCH and is likely to be produced in court today. But the timing of his hearing has not been provided by the authorities due to his deteriorating health. The option of being kept in a hospital's prisoner ward is also considered open.
