The number of women availing Bihar’s Pink Bus service has increased sixfold in the past two months, reflecting growing trust and demand for the women-centric public transport initiative. While only around 5,000 women used these buses in May, the figure surged to over 28,000 in June, taking the total ridership to more than 33,000 during this period.

According to the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC), Patna division saw the highest number of women commuters, over 21,000 in two months. Other divisions, including Bhagalpur, Purnia, Gaya, and Darbhanga, reported more than 7,000 female passengers combined, with a steady month-on-month rise.

Currently, 20 CNG-powered pink buses are operational across the state: eight in Patna, four in Muzaffarpur, and two each in Bhagalpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Purnia. In a bid to expand the service, BSRTC is set to introduce 80 additional pink buses by the end of August, including 35 for Patna alone.

To ensure women’s safety and comfort, these buses are equipped with features such as panic buttons, CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, charging points, female conductors, sanitary pad vending machines, and medicine kits.
