Bihar Assembly Election 2025: Political activity is intensifying for the Bihar Assembly elections, and an official announcement is expected at any time after October 6. However, amidst the electoral preparations, the most significant challenge emerging is the issue of seat-sharing. Whether it's the NDA or the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), both coalitions are struggling to reach a consensus on the division of seats, adding to the complexity of the political climate.

The Demands Of The Alliances

The NDA coalition includes the BJP, JDU, LJP(R), HAM(S) and RLOM. If the individual demands of all these parties were to be met, it would hypothetically require 283 assembly seats. On the other hand, the Mahagathbandhan, which consists of RJD, Congress, CPI(ML), VIP, CPI, CPM, RALOJAPA, and JMM, has put forth demands that would necessitate 350 seats. The reality, however, is that Bihar has only 243 assembly seats.

The NDA's Dilemma

Within the NDA, the JDU and BJP are reportedly prepared to contest around 100 seats each. The challenge lies with the smaller allies, as the LJP(R) is demanding 45 seats, HAM is asking for 15-20 seats, and the RLOM wants 12 seats. Balancing these demands from smaller parties is proving to be a significant challenge for the NDA.

The Mahagathbandhan's Challenge

In the Grand Alliance, the RJD wants to contest 140 seats, while the Congress is demanding 70. Further complicating matters, the VIP is asking for 60 seats, the CPI(ML) wants 40, the CPI is demanding 24, and the CPM is seeking 11 seats. The RALOJAPA and JMM are also demanding their share. The RJD is facing immense pressure from all its allies, and there is also a lack of consensus on Tejashwi Yadav's leadership. The Congress has stated that the chief ministerial face will be decided only after the elections.

The Path Forward

The Election Commission has instructed that all official government work be completed before October 6, signalling that the election announcement is imminent. Polling and the declaration of results are expected in November. For both alliances, seat-sharing remains the single biggest obstacle, and finding a viable solution does not appear to be an easy task.
