A pregnant woman tragically lost her life following a surgical procedure performed by an unqualified individual who allegedly relied on YouTube videos for guidance. The incident took place in the Kahalgaon area of Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. Remarkably, the newborn survived the ordeal.
The woman, identified as Swati Devi from Thakurganti Modhiya in Jharkhand, had been staying with her mother in Rasalpur, Bihar, during her pregnancy. Swati’s husband, Vikram Sah, works as a labourer. On the night of the tragedy, Swati began experiencing severe labour pains and was rushed to a local private clinic where she had been receiving treatment.
According to the family and local witnesses, the clinic was run by an unqualified man who had been posing as a doctor. After examining Swati, the man allegedly informed the family that a surgical procedure was necessary. He sought their consent and, with no medical equipment or qualified staff on hand, proceeded to perform the surgery after consulting YouTube videos on his mobile phone.
Eyewitnesses reported that throughout the operation, the practitioner and his assistant were repeatedly seen referring to their phones for instructions. The lack of medical expertise and proper facilities led to excessive bleeding, and Swati died during the procedure. Her baby, however, was delivered safely.
Once the woman’s condition worsened and she passed away, the accused practitioner and his assistant reportedly informed the family that her condition was critical, advising them to take her to another hospital. They quickly closed the clinic and fled the scene, leaving the grieving family behind.
The tragic death sparked outrage in the local community. Villagers, along with Swati’s family, gathered outside the clinic, placing her body there and staging a protest. They demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and action against the illegal clinic operating without proper medical qualifications.
Police officials from Rasalpur arrived after being informed, brought the situation under control, and sent the body for post-mortem examination. An investigation was launched.
Local resident Rajesh Kumar, who claimed to have knowledge of previous cases at the clinic, alleged that the unqualified practitioner had previously carried out treatments and surgeries after consulting online videos. These incidents, he said, had been covered up before, but now the community was demanding justice for Swati's family. He called for swift and stringent action against those running such illegal medical facilities.
