Weeks after prominent businessman Gopal Khemka’s killing, the former BJP Kisan Morcha (farmer’s wing) Punpun President was gunned down in broad daylight in Patna’s Sheikhpura Area. The incident occurred outside the residence of the victim on Saturday night.

Two bike-born assailants shot at Kewat four times and ran away from the crime scene. The 52-year-old victim suffered bullet injuries and was rushed to Patna AIIMS, where he succumbed to injuries.

As police are conducting an investigation into the case and the forensic team has also reached the incident site, raids are being carried out to nab the murderers.

"Surendra was working in the fields when unidentified men shot him dead. He was rushed to AIIMS, but he died during treatment. We have recorded statements of his relatives, and action is being taken," police officer Kanhaiya Singh said.

Kewat's murder is big crime development in the state as it he had served BJP and the murder comes just days after businessman Gopal Khemka was shot. 

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, targeted the state government with a post on X. "And now, a BJP leader shot dead in Patna! What to say, and to whom? Is there anyone in the NDA government willing to listen to the truth or admit their mistakes.”

He further asked, "Everyone knows about the CM's health, but what are the two useless BJP deputy chief ministers doing?"

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had accused Nitish Kumar of making Bihar crime capital in collaboration with BJP. In an X post, opposition leader in Lok Sabha said, "Bihar is today living in the shadow of loot, bullets and murder. Crime has become the new normal and the government has completely failed.”

In an hitting reponse, Union Minister and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has accused the RJD of backing criminals to malign the state government. He said, "Criminals are no longer entertained in Bihar Chief Minister's residence. They are gunned down. Those raising questions on law and order should understand this.”
