In a major push to enhance language education, the Bihar government will establish language laboratories in all 9,463 government secondary and higher secondary schools of the state. These labs will aim to sharpen students’ linguistic abilities by offering opportunities for creative expression and competency-based learning.

According to officials, each language laboratory will be equipped with a library and computer system, creating a comprehensive environment for language development. Students will be encouraged to engage in a variety of creative tasks such as writing poems, documenting daily experiences, illustrating stories, conducting interviews, drawing cartoons, and scripting short plays.

This initiative aligns with the recommendations made in the Bihar Curriculum Framework 2025, which identified the absence of language laboratories as a key shortcoming in the current education system. The framework emphasised that without proper language labs, students often lack adequate opportunities to develop strong communication skills.

Experts involved in drafting the framework also highlighted the need for language education from the primary level, advocating the use of audio-visual tools, transcription of children’s literature in local languages, and the creation of new child-friendly literature. They stressed the importance of keeping language teaching interactive, engaging, and aligned with skill-based outcomes, instead of being overly focused on textbook completion.

Additionally, the curriculum suggests that magazines and newspapers should be readily available in school libraries, and students should be given ample chances to participate in dialogue-based activities to develop communication proficiency.

This move is part of Bihar’s broader goal to make language learning more practical, inclusive, and inspiring, ensuring students are well-equipped with essential life and communication skills.
