In a major step towards environmental conservation and water resource management, the Bihar government will construct rainwater harvesting structures in 1,976 government schools across the state under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali programme. An estimated Rs 15.80 crore will be spent on this initiative in the first phase during the financial year 2025–26.
The Finance Department has approved the funding, and the Education Department aims to complete construction of these structures by June-July. The rainwater harvesting systems will help recharge groundwater levels by collecting and channeling rainwater into the soil.
According to officials, this project is part of a broader plan to equip all government schools in Bihar with water conservation structures under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission. In the current phase, Rs 3 crore has been sanctioned for 375 selected schools, out of which Rs 1.32 crore has already been released.
Each school will receive Rs 80,000 from the Bihar Education Project Council for the construction of the physical structures. The implementation and monitoring of the project will be overseen at the district level. As per directives issued during a mission review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, the water storage infrastructure is to be developed in schools from 2025 to 2030.
