In a major step aimed at strengthening maternal and child health services, the Bihar government is set to establish 328 breastfeeding corners across government hospitals and public health centres in the state. The initiative seeks to provide mothers with safe, clean and private spaces within health institutions, enabling them to breastfeed their infants comfortably and without hesitation.
According to the Health Department, breastfeeding corners have already been set up in phases at all medical college hospitals, district hospitals and subdivisional hospitals in Bihar. The facility is now being extended to primary health centres under the same programme.
Officials said the breastfeeding corners will be designed keeping mothers’ needs in mind, with comfortable seating, adequate lighting and ventilation, a hygienic environment and complete privacy. Facilities for drinking water and hand washing will also be provided at these dedicated spaces.
Health experts emphasise that exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months after birth is essential for an infant’s growth and immunity. However, the absence of appropriate facilities in hospitals and public places often discourages mothers from continuing breastfeeding. The new initiative is expected to offer psychological comfort to mothers and help improve breastfeeding rates.
The scheme aligns with the objectives of the National Nutrition Mission and various maternal and child health programmes. Health officials said it aims to reduce infant malnutrition, strengthen immunity among newborns and improve overall maternal health. The initiative is also expected to enhance the quality of healthcare services and mark a significant step towards building a more women-friendly and sensitive health system in the state.
