The Road Construction Department has accelerated work on the proposed greenfield bypass road project aimed at improving connectivity between Lakhisarai and Patna districts. The new bypass will run from BNM College Ghat in Barhiya (Lakhisarai) to Maranchi in Patna, passing through Maharani Sthan, Panchmahala, Nauranga, and Dumra.

The 10-kilometre-long project will be developed in three phases. Under the first phase (Part-A), planned for the financial year 2024-25, a 4.70-kilometre stretch will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 23.21 crore. The department has set a target to complete this phase within 12 months. Officials said that phased execution will help in better management of time and cost while ensuring strict quality monitoring.

Once completed, the bypass is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the border areas of Lakhisarai and Patna, where increasing vehicle movement has put pressure on National Highways and other major routes. The new road will provide an alternative route for heavy vehicles, offering relief to residents and reducing travel time. It will also facilitate faster movement of agricultural produce, industrial materials, and other commercial goods.

The project was announced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during his Pragati Yatra in February 2025. Following the announcement, the processes of survey, technical approval, and financial sanction were completed at the departmental level. The bypass has long been a key demand of the local population, and the initiation of construction marks a major step towards its fulfilment.

Alok Kumar Thakur, Executive Engineer of the Patna City Road Division, said the project would be executed in three phases and that a tender has already been issued for the first phase. Construction will begin immediately after the tender process is completed. He added that strict adherence to prescribed quality standards will be ensured and that completing the project within the stipulated timeframe remains a top priority.

Officials further noted that the new bypass will not only strengthen regional connectivity but also boost economic activity in surrounding areas. The development is expected to open up opportunities for future commercial, industrial, and residential growth along the corridor, contributing to the overall development of the region.
