The Bihar Education Department has announced a significant change in the management of the mid-day meal (MDM) scheme across government schools. As part of a pilot project, the responsibility for overseeing the scheme will now be transferred from principals and head teachers to other designated teachers.

According to directives issued by the Department of Corrections, the new system will be implemented from May 13 to June 13 in one block per district. This move, initiated under the guidance of Additional Chief Secretary Dr S Siddharth, aims to streamline school administration and improve the efficiency of MDM delivery.

Based on the success of the pilot, the model will be extended to all schools in the state. Under this arrangement, principals will focus solely on academic activities, while a designated teacher will manage the MDM scheme.

This includes taking attendance photos an hour after school begins, distributing food grains based on actual student numbers, and documenting meal distribution with daily photographs. The teacher-in-charge will be limited to three hours of teaching daily to ensure dedicated time for effective MDM oversight.
