Preparations are underway to ease the Muzaffarpur'worsening traffic congestion, with officials formulating a comprehensive strategy during a meeting at the Collectorate auditorium on Saturday. The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Dr Rajbhushan Chaudhary, City MLA Ranjan Kumar, and District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen.

Unregulated auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, and roadside encroachments were identified as major contributors to traffic chaos. Based on this, authorities have prepared a plan to bring these vehicles under strict regulation.

District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen directed officials to divide the urban area into multiple zones and conduct a survey to determine the vehicle-handling capacity of each major route. A colour-coding system will then be assigned to each route, and auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws will be allowed to operate only on their designated colours.
The City SP, District Transport Officer, and Deputy SP have been tasked with implementing the system.

Roadside stalls were flagged as a significant cause of road blockages. The DM has ordered the identification of appropriate locations for organised vending zones, along with clear demarcation. Vendors operating outside designated areas will face legal action.

Additional police teams will be deployed at busy intersections such as Motijheel, Aghoria Bazar, Harisabha Chowk, Kalambagh Chowk, Maripur, and Bairia. Officials noted that autos, e-rickshaws, and carts frequently halt haphazardly at intersections, worsening jams.
Police personnel will now be equipped with handheld machines to collect fines instantly.

The plan includes introducing one-way routes where needed, putting up no-parking signage, using loudspeaker announcements in crowded areas, and establishing new traffic posts at critical points to ensure enforcement.

The lack of designated parking, especially on the Motijheel bridge, was highlighted as a recurring problem. The DM has directed officials to identify land for a multi-level parking facility, describing it as a long-term solution to the city’s growing traffic burden.

Union Minister Dr Rajbhushan Chaudhary stressed the need for effective implementation of both short-term and long-term plans, alongside improving sanitation, shifting waste disposal outside city limits, monitoring sewage treatment operations, and installing proper lighting on bridges and dark stretches to curb crime.

MLA Ranjan Kumar said the aim is to make the city “clean, beautiful, and safe,” adding that everyone must follow the rules. He noted that residents are frustrated as five-minute trips often stretch to half an hour, and urged swift and strict execution of the new traffic plan.
