A woman from the Maniyari police station area has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the women's police station against a prospective groom and his family for calling off a wedding after dowry demands were not met. The complainant alleges that the cancellation has caused a financial loss of lakhs of rupees and severe damage to their social reputation.

Timeline Of Events

According to the application, the alliance was initiated in June 2025, when the groom’s family, residents of the Garhan police station area, approved of the girl.

Engagement: The 'chheka' (engagement) ceremony was held on June 30, during which the bride's family gave Rs 1.5 lakh in cash.

Formal Assessment: In July, a 'dekha-suni' ceremony was completed in Vaishali district, where the girl was thoroughly assessed and approved. Despite this, the groom’s side insisted on seeing the girl multiple times at temples and other locations.

Scheduled Wedding: With the consent of both parties, the wedding was scheduled for December 4, 2025. The 'matkor' ritual was set for December 3, and wedding invitations had already been printed and distributed to relatives.

Dowry Demands And Financial Loss

The complainant alleges that despite the initial cash payment, the groom demanded an Apache motorcycle, and his father demanded additional cash. The woman claims to have spent a total of Rs 5.5 lakh on wedding preparations and the distribution of invitations by the time the wedding was called off.

Sudden Refusal And Harassment

The girl’s mother stated that during the final round of negotiations, she visited the groom's house with seven community members. Despite discussions lasting from 4 pm to 9 pm and attempts by the matchmaker to persuade him, the groom refused to proceed with the marriage.

Furthermore, the complainant alleged that following the refusal, the groom and his brother-in-law attempted to meet her daughter under the pretext of giving her a mobile phone and insisted she go out with them. The girl refused, citing social customs.
