Nitish Kumar Biography: Days after registering a landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly election, the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to form a new government in the state. The Janata Dal United (JDU) stalwart Nitish Kumar will take oath as the chief minister of Bihar for the record 10th time on Thursday. Widely known as 'Sushasan Babu', Nitish Kumar has been in the centre of the state's politics for the past two decades. While he received minor setbacks from time to time, the JDU leader made sure to maintain his relevance through his beneficiary schemes and good image.

- Nitish Kumar was born in Bakhtiyarpur district on March 1, 1951.
- He completed his electrical engineering degree from Bihar College of Engineering (now NIT Patna) in 1972.
- Nitish entered into politics through the famous JP movement and was also arrested during the emergency.
- Joined the Janata Party and contested the Assembly election in 1977; however, he was defeated by a regional strong face.
- He got elected in the 1989 Lok Sabha polls and served as the agriculture minister.
- While Nitish Kumar played a key role in making Lalu Yadav the chief minister of Bihar, he resigned from the Janata Dal due to some conflicts four years later.
- Along with the socialist leader George Fernandes, Kumar founded the Samata Party in 1994.
- Nitish Kumar shifted to the national politics and handled key portfolios, including Railways, Surface Transport, and Agriculture.
- Nitish Kumar famously resigned as the Railway Minister following a train disaster in 1999.
- While Nitish Kumar became the chief minister of Bihar for the first time in 2000, the government only lasted for seven days due to lack of numbers.
- However, the alliance of JDU and BJP successfully formed a government in the 2005 polls, and Kumar became CM for the full term.
- The NDA registered a massive victory in the 2010 Assembly polls by winning 206 seats.
- However, the JDU leader parted ways with BJP after Narendra Modi was announced as the saffron party's PM face.
- JDU, along with RJD and Congress, formed a government in the state after winning the 2015 Assembly elections.
- However, Nitish Kumar again joined the NDA in 2017, citing interference in work from the RJD leaders.
- The NDA registered a victory in the 2020 Assembly polls; however, Nitish Kumar again left the alliance in 2022 and formed a government with the Mahagathbandhan.
- However, in 2024, Nitish Kumar came back to the NDA and took oath as the chief minister for the ninth time.

While his critics call him 'paltu' (the leader who switched sides several times), Nitish Kumar is widely known for his law and order and beneficiary schemes, especially for the women of Bihar.
