The much-anticipated Ravan Dahan ceremony at Patna's historic Gandhi Maidan concluded in an unusual and disappointing manner this year. While thousands of eager spectators gathered to witness the annual burning of the Ravana effigy, a sudden, heavy downpour played spoilsport.
The atmosphere at Gandhi Maidan was electric, with a massive crowd of all ages—from children to the elderly—gathered in excitement. Everyone was anxiously awaiting the moment the effigy would be set ablaze, a spectacular sight that draws thousands each year.
However, just as the ceremony reached its climax and it was time to light the effigy, a heavy spell of rain began. The downpour effectively cast a pall over the entire event. As a result, instead of burning to the ground, the water-soaked effigy of Ravana disintegrated and collapsed.
The unexpected outcome left the crowd disheartened. Despite the rain, most people had stayed, hoping the ceremony would proceed. But when it became clear that the main event was ruined, a wave of disappointment swept through the grounds. The mood, which should have been festive and joyous, quickly turned gloomy as disappointed families—children, adults, and the elderly alike—began to return home.
Dussehra symbolises the victory of good over evil, marked by the burning of Ravana's effigy. While the festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country, the weather in Patna turned the tables on this year's celebrations.
