A workshop on EEG (Electro Encephalogram) testing for identifying neurological disorders in children was organised in the Pediatric Department of IGIMS on Sunday. The workshop aimed to educate doctors and postgraduate students about the differences in EEG procedures for children and adults, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Dr Praveen Kumar, Head of Pediatric Neurology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, led the session, emphasising the importance of EEG in diagnosing conditions like mental retardation, epilepsy, and brain weakness.

Around 50 participants attended the workshop, where IGIMS Director Prof Dr Binde Kumar, Dean Dr Om Kumar, Medical Superintendent Dr Manish Mandal, and Pediatrics Department Head Dr Jayant Prakash shared their views.

Dr Kumar highlighted the necessity of such workshops for better detection of neurological diseases through EEG. Dr Mandal stressed the importance of EEG training for postgraduate students to address the challenges posed by neurological disorders in children.

According to a 2023 AIIMS New Delhi study, 72 per cent of children with neurological disorders had abnormal EEG readings, with an 80 per cent sensitivity rate for detecting epilepsy in children.

Dr Prakash mentioned that similar workshops would continue in the future to enhance the knowledge and skills of medical professionals in handling pediatric neurological conditions such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and genetic disorders.
