11 segments of the Bakhtiyarpur-Tajpur bridge have been lying unused on the ground for an extended period. These segments were brought in for launching, but due to a storm that caused the launcher to fall, work on the bridge stalled.
With the project now resuming, instructions have been given to inspect these eleven segments. Without expert recommendations, the construction company will not be permitted to launch the segments. Road Construction Minister Nitin Naveen has also ordered a technical inspection of the entire segment.
The bridge's superstructure uses a technology called segment launching, where segments are cast elsewhere and then placed on top through a launcher. However, these eleven segments have been sitting idle for about seven to eight years, potentially developing technical issues.
The ongoing inspection is determining if the segments are still in working condition. Any segments that are found unsuitable will not be launched but will be replaced with new ones, delaying the bridge's construction until the segments are deemed functional.
Additionally, the segments already placed on the bridge are also being checked. These were installed a long time ago, and their ability to bear the load is under review. Any cracks detected in these segments will undergo further examination. One segment, damaged when the launcher fell, is also being repaired, and the process is being closely monitored.
Regarding the bridge's connectivity, Minister Nitin Naveen mentioned that the approach road being developed from the Tajpur end of the Bakhtiyarpur-Tajpur bridge will soon provide access to two national highways. The concerned agency has been instructed to expedite the process.
