To improve traffic flow in Patna's urban areas, the city will introduce a new zone-wise permit system for auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws, a decision made during a high-level meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Dr Chandrashekhar Singh on Friday. The application process for these new permits is set to begin on September 23.

This marks the first time since 2014 that permits will be issued for the approximately 75,000 auto-rickshaws registered in the district. Vehicle owners, including e-rickshaw drivers, can apply for a permit for one specific zone and choose up to three routes within it. The meeting was attended by the District Magistrate, Senior Superintendent of Police, Deputy Development Commissioner, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), and the District Transport Officer.

The White Zone has been created as a "Reserve Zone" for vehicles on private hire, which will travel directly to their destination without making intermediate stops.

Commissioner Dr Chandrashekhar Singh stated that this organized transport service is designed to make the system safe, congestion-free, and will also help in controlling pollution. The number of vehicles and their designated routes have been determined based on the carrying capacity of the roads.
