As the political atmosphere intensifies ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Barharia in Siwan district on June 20, marking his second visit to the region in just over a month. The visit, although officially a government event, carries significant political weight as it targets the stronghold of the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan), which currently holds six of the eight assembly constituencies in Siwan. The BJP holds the remaining two.
During his previous stop in Siwan, Modi addressed a rally in Goreyakothi on May 21, 2024, during the Lok Sabha elections. This time, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has strategically chosen Barharia, a constituency currently held by the RJD, to host the Prime Minister. The visit is part of a broader campaign by the ruling coalition to reclaim influence in regions dominated by the opposition.
The Siwan parliamentary seat is currently represented by JDU MP Vijayalakshmi Devi, adding further intrigue to the visit. In preparation, the NDA has mobilised over 70 promotional vehicles to reach out to rural voters and organised more than 100 local meetings, led by BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal and Health and Law Minister Mangal Pandey.
While Modi's visit is officially tied to launching government initiatives, political observers suggest he may also address controversial recent events. The BJP has strongly condemned a video clip from RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s 78th birth anniversary, in which a photo of Dr BR Ambedkar was placed near his feet—a move perceived as disrespectful by the BJP, which has demanded an apology and threatened agitation. The issue may feature in Modi's address, possibly as part of a larger criticism of the opposition’s stance on Dalit matters.
During his last rally in Siwan, Modi had fiercely attacked the Mahagathbandhan over issues like jungle raj, youth migration, corruption, and dynastic politics, indirectly targeting Tejashwi Yadav. In his signature style, he had remarked: “The heirs of jungle raj are roaming around saying Modi will be on bed rest. I want no citizen to be on bed rest — everyone should live with energy and enthusiasm.”
This upcoming visit will be Modi’s sixth to Bihar since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and the 52nd since 2014, underscoring his continued focus on the state. During the visit, the PM is expected to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for infrastructure projects worth Rs 10,000 crore, including the Ram-Janaki Path, a Vande Bharat train between Patna and Gorakhpur, a sewage treatment plant, and other urban development initiatives across several cities.

With Assembly polls nearing, Modi's visit is being seen as a significant effort by the NDA to strengthen its position in a politically crucial region.
