An elderly tribal woman in a remote village of Bihar was beaten to death over allegations of witchcraft practice. The disturbing event occurred in a village under Nauhatta police station area of Rohtas district on Thursday evening.

Victim Kismatiya Devi's son said that his neighbor, Upendra Oraon's son, had passed away due to an illness on Thursday. Vishnudev Oraon, the grandfather of the eight-year-old boy, and family members accused Kismatiya Devi of practising witchcraft and killing the boy. They reached her house with the dead body of an eight-year-old and attacked her with sharp weapons until she died on the spot, the Hindustan Times reported.

The police said that the village is situated in Maoist-affected forests. It is 50 km away from the Nauhatta police station and 70km south of Sasaram, the report added.

A police team led by SHO Chandra Shekhar Sharma brought the bodies of the woman and the boy in the morning, as they could not move in the Maoist-influenced area at night.

A case has been registered against Vishnudev Oraon, the prime accused, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Witchcraft Act, based on the statement of a woman's family. Oraon has been arrested, and the bodies have been sent for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
