GST Council Meeting 2025 Live Updates: The all-poweful GST Council on Wednesday has approved the two-tier GST structure of 5% and 18%, removing the 12% and 28% slabs, according to a report by Money Control. The GST Council, which began its key meet today, has also reportedly brought consumer goods such as shoes and clothes in the lower price range of up to Rs 2,500 under the lowest GST tax bracket of 5%. This would bring more items into the lowest tax bracket, as currently only goods priced up to Rs 1,000 attract a GST of 5 per cent, while those costing more are taxed at a higher 12 per cent.
The 56th GST Council meeting, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharama, began on Wednesday to discuss the Centre's proposed reforms in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day.
The proposals in the Centre's 'next-gen' GST reforms include a two-tier GST slab system -- 5 per cent and 18 per cent -- by moving products from the current 12 and 28 per cent slab to lower rates. Currently, products are taxed under the 4-tier GST structure of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. The Centre has also proposed a special 40 per cent rate to be levied on a select few items.

The GST Council, which began its meeting on Wednesday, has reportedly approved proposed two-tier GST structure. According to a report by Moneycontrol, citing sources, now goods will be taxed under a dual tax rate structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent. The other two slabs -- 12 per cent and 28 per cent -- have been removed. The prices of consumer goods will come down due to the lower taxes, leading to an increase in demand and spurring growth in the economy.
However, the government has decided to keep the higher slab of 40 per cent on sin goods such as cigarettes, tobacco, sugary drinks and luxury goods that are bought by the high-income groups.
