8th Pay Commission: The central government has begun the appointment process for 42 key positions in a significant step toward the creation of the 8th Pay Commission. The action suggests that the government is moving more quickly to establish the new pay commission, which will affect 57 lakh pensioners and approximately 48 lakh central government employees.

Recruitment has started for 40 positions, including various advisor and secretariat roles, as per circulars released on April 21 by the Ministry of Finance's Department of Expenditure (DoE). Furthermore, the appointment of the commission's chairman and two important members is imminent.

The chairman and members will be announced soon

Financial Express reports that two important members and the chairman of the 8th Pay Commission have nearly finalized their names. Soon, the official announcement is anticipated. Along with three under secretaries, two directors or deputy secretaries, and 37 other staff members, the commission will start preliminary work as soon as the Terms of Reference (ToR) are announced.

8th Pay Commission will have fewer members

According to sources, the 8th Pay Commission will operate more efficiently than earlier commissions. For comparison, the 7th Pay Commission, which was presided over by Justice Ashok Kumar Mathur, comprised 45 members, including 16 advisors and 18 secretariat employees. The next commission, on the other hand, is anticipated to have fewer members, much like previous commissions such as the 5th Pay Commission (3 members) and 6th Pay Commission (4 members).

The National Council (JCM) has begun to draft demands for employees

A thorough memorandum to be submitted to the 8th Pay Commission is currently being prepared by the National Council's staff side (JCM). Important topics including the minimum wage, pay scale revision, fitment factor, allowances, promotion policy, and pension structure were covered in a lengthy meeting on April 22, 2025. All government employee unions have been asked to submit their recommendations in Word or PDF format by May 20, 2025, to a drafting committee that has been established.

Over 1 Crore Employees, Pensioners Will be Benefitted

The 8th Pay Commission will be crucial in updating the pay, benefits, and working conditions for approximately 48 lakh central government employees and 57 lakh pensioners once it is established. Although the ToR and the commission's complete formation have not yet been formally announced by the government, recent events strongly imply that the process is well underway.
