The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated on Monday that 97.87 percent of Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system, and the public only has Rs 7,581 crore worth of withdrawn notes. On May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation.
The total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the end of business on May 19, 2023, decreased to Rs 7,581 lakh crore at the end of business on June 28, 2024.
"Thus, 97.87 percent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, has since been returned," the central bank said in a statement.
The facility to deposit and/or exchange Rs 2,000 notes was available in all bank branches across the country until October 7, 2023. The facility to exchange Rs 2,000 notes has been available at the Reserve Bank's 19 issuing offices since May 19, 2023. Effective October 9, 2023, RBI issuing offices are also accepting Rs 2,000 notes from individuals and entities for deposit into their bank accounts.
Furthermore, the general public can send Rs 2,000 notes through India Post from any post office in the country to any RBI issuing office for deposit into their bank accounts. The 19 RBI offices that accept/exchange currency notes are located in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Guwahati, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, and New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram. Rs 2,000 notes were introduced in November 2016, after the demonetization of the then-prevailing Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.
