BIS Raids Amazon And flipkart Warehouses: To curb the sale of non-compliant products on e-commerce platforms, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has stepped up its efforts. The BIS has carried out multiple search and seizure operations in cities such as Lucknow, Gurugram and Delhi, raiding multiple warehouses associated with major online retailers such as Amazon and Flipkart.

On March 7, 2025, the BIS raided Amazon's warehouse in Lucknow and seized 24 hand blenders and 215 toys that did not have the required BIS certification. A similar action at Flipkart's warehouse in Gurugram led to the seizure of 41 speakers, 134 toys and 534 stainless steel bottles that did not have the required certification.

In addition, the BIS found 58 aluminium foils, 34 metal water bottles, 25 toys, 20 hand blenders, 7 PVC cables, 2 food mixers and 1 speaker that did not meet certification standards. Further investigation revealed that the non-certified products were being delivered to Techvision International Pvt Ltd.

Acting on this information, BIS raided two premises of the company in Delhi and found 40 gas stoves, 95 electric room heaters, 4,000 electric food mixers and about 7,000 electric water heaters that were not BIS certified. The seized items included popular brands such as DigiSmart, Activa, Inalsa, Cello Swift and Butterfly.

Following the seizure, two cases have been registered against M/s Techvision International Pvt Ltd for violating Section 17(1) and 17(3) of the BIS Act, 2016. Preparations are underway to register cases against other violators. Violators will be fined a minimum of Rs 2 lakh, which may extend to ten times the value of the goods found non-compliant, as prescribed in Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016.

Pressure cookers, hand-held blenders, food mixers, electric irons, room heaters, PVC cables, gas stoves, toys, helmets, switches, outlets and aluminium foil are some of the frequently used products for which the government has made BIS certification mandatory to protect the interests of consumers.

Since non-certified products have not undergone third-party testing to ensure that they meet safety and performance standards, they pose serious safety risks. These products may not bear the ISI mark or their license number may be invalid (CM/L number).

To protect consumer safety and prevent the distribution of substandard products, BIS continues its rigorous market surveillance.
