Diwali Bank Holiday: Banks in some parts of India will remain closed on Tuesday, 21 October, for Diwali Amavasya, Deepawali, and Govardhan Pooja, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) state-wise holiday calendar. Cities observing bank closures include Mumbai, Bhopal, and Guwahati, while banks in most other cities, such as Delhi, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad, will operate as usual.

Are Banks Closed Today On October 21?

According to the RBI, banks will remain closed today in Mumbai, Bhopal, Belapur, Gangtok, Guwahati, Imphal, Jammu, Nagpur, Raipur, and Srinagar on account of Diwali Amavasya (Laxmi Pujan), Deepawali, and Govardhan Pooja.

Bank branches in cities including New Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Agartala, Kanpur, Shimla, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Aizawl, Itanagar, Kochi, Kohima, Panaji, Ranchi, Shillong, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada, and Patna will remain open as usual.

Holiday in Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra.

October 23 (Thursday) - Bhai Bij / Bhaidooj / Chitragupt Jayanti / Laxmi Puja / Bhratridwitiya / Ningol Chakkouba

Holiday in Gujarat, Assam, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh.

On bank holidays, online banking services remain available across the country, allowing customers to carry out financial transactions conveniently, even when physical branches are closed.

Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated on the Amavasya Tithi. In 2025, this Tithi spans two days, from October 20 to October 21. While most parts of India observed Diwali on October 20, some regions are celebrating the festival today.
