Gig Workers: Delivery agents working for Zomato, Flipkart, Amazon, Blinkit and other major online and quick-commerce platforms will soon be eligible for a pension, provident fund, and health insurance. The Labor, Ministry, under the Modi government, is considering announcing a new policy for these workers before the budget session i.e. February 1. Delivery agents or gig workers are paid on a per-project basis or for each delivery and there are no benefits like pension, PF, or insurance for them. The government is now planning to introduce a policy for the social security of such gig workers.
Financial security for delivery agents and gig workers
The central government is working on a scheme to provide financial security to gig workers. Gig workers are typically employees who are paid for one type of work or project rather than working full-time, such as delivery agents. According to Union Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, under this policy, gig workers will be provided social security benefits such as pension and healthcare.

The policy can be implemented in February
Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the goal of this new policy is to ensure the security of gig workers so that they are not deprived of their rights. He said that the Labor Ministry plans to introduce this policy before the next budget. The scheme would ensure health services, insurance, and other social security to gig workers.
According to Niti Aayog's data, there are about 65 lakh gig workers in India and this sector is growing rapidly. This number could soon cross 2 crores.
Union Minister Mandaviya said that this new policy will be legally considered across the country. The government is considering bringing in a unique identification number system, which will facilitate social security benefits to gig workers. This will allow them access to government schemes and services easily, he said.
The Labour Ministry is taking suggestions from all stakeholders regarding this policy. The ministry is considering all these ideas in depth so that the new policy can be implemented as soon as possible.
