Google Layoffs: Days after laying off hundreds of employees this month, teach giant Google CEO Sundar Pichai hinted that more layoffs are in the lineup.
Pichai, in a memo sent to all employees titled “2024 priorities and the year ahead”, said the company has tough choices to make.
He said, "We have ambitious goals and will be investing in our big priorities this year”. “the reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices,” The CEO wrote further.

Pichai said these “tough choices” would eliminate many jobs. However, the Google CEO didn’t confirm the number of employees who would be laid off but hinted that it won’t be as big as last year. Earlier in 2023, Google laid off 12,000 employees in one go. The job cut had impacted almost every team. “These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team,” Pichai wrote in the memo.
As per a report in Verge, Sundar Pichai stated that the layoffs would be done to remove layers to simplify execution in some areas, many of these changes have been announced already. Some teams will continue to make decisions throughout and some roles may be affected, Pichai wrote.
Earlier this month, Google laid off employees from various teams, including the AR/VR division and the ad sales division. However, Pichai did not confirm a timeline for the next round, his note suggests that Google may continue to lay off employees throughout the year.
Last year, when Google announced job cuts, employee benefits were cut. It is not clear whether this will be the case in 2024.
