Electricity bills are one of the major monthly expenses of a household's total budget, and it is weighing in more as the use of electric appliances has been increasing every passing year. This year alone, during the peak summer, the country’s power grids face unprecedented demand.

Meanwhile, millions of Indian households are embracing a green alternative, turning their rooftops into personal mini-power plants and under the central government’s flagship green initiative, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, residential consumers are securing massive financial waivers to transition to clean energy.

The program aims to provide up to 300 units of free electricity monthly to one crore households, and to keep it cost-effective, the government provides direct cash subsidy deposited straight into their bank accounts to offset setup costs.

How Much Subsidy One Can Get?

Under the government scheme, the cash benefit is calculated strictly according to the kilowatt (kW) capacity of the solar plant installed: For anentry-level shield of 1 kW, homeowners with minimal consumption (0 to 150 units monthly) receive direct assistance of Rs 30,000.  For a 2 kW solar set-up for mid-sized households consuming between 150 and 300 units, the subsidy doubles to Rs 60,000.
