India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in August 2025 touched Rs 1,86,315 crore, reflecting a 6.5 percent increase over July, as per data released on September 1. Earlier in April, GST mop-up had reached a record high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore. On a year-on-year basis, domestic revenue rose 6.6 percent to Rs 1.36 lakh crore in August, while revenue from imports declined 1.2 percent to Rs 49,354 crore.

Gross GST collections were Rs 1.75 lakh crore in August 2024, compared to Rs 1.96 lakh crore in July 2025. In August 2025, net GST revenue rose to Rs 1.67 lakh crore, reflecting a 10.7 percent year-on-year increase. The figures come just ahead of the GST Council meeting, where the Centre and states are set to discuss rate rationalisation and a possible reduction in tax slabs.

PM Modi Announced Next Generation Reforms In GST

On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that next-generation GST reforms will be rolled out by Diwali, promising “substantial” tax relief for the common man along with benefits for small and medium enterprises. He noted that with the indirect tax regime completing eight years, the time was ripe for major reforms.

Opposition-ruled states have also backed GST rationalisation but have stressed the need for safeguards to prevent profiteering and to ensure that the benefits of lower tax rates actually reach consumers.

The GST Council will meet on September 3-4, where Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her state counterparts are expected to discuss a two-slab tax structure of 5 percent and 18 . The council will also review reports from three Groups of Ministers (GoMs) on rate rationalisation, compensation cess, and taxation of insurance services.
