The All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP) asked the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), a body collecting and managing direct taxes, to extend the July 31 deadline for filing income tax returns 2024 to August 31. Narayan Jain, AIFTP national president and Direct Tax Representation Committee chairman S M Surana, in a memorandum, said that the floods in several states have impacted the process of filing returns severely.
Landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have exacerbated these difficulties, they added. Several issues are being faced with the income tax portal and software, including difficulties in downloading and validating various forms, the memorandum also mentioned.

Further, the organization pointed out that the process of paying self-assessment tax through banks and downloading challans is time-consuming.
If you are hoping for an extension for the ITR filing deadline, you could be disappointed. the chances are low of extending in July 31 deadline, as there has been no official announcement from the Ministry of Finance. The news reports also suggest that the government does not have any plan to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2024-25.
Despite significant speculation and a surge in ITR filings ahead of the deadline, the Income Tax Department has not issued any official statement regarding an extension. However, taxpayers have still 2 days left to file their ITR, if they fail to do so, then they have to pay penalties for filling their ITR.
