In a major relief for the taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced a one-day extension for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) on Monday. The ITRs for the Assessment Year 2025-26 can now be filed till September 16, 2025, without any penalty or late fee.

Earlier, the last date for filing ITRs by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and those who do not have to get their accounts audited was extended from July 31 to September 15.

The CBDT issued a statement announcing the extension. The statement reads that the due date for filing the ITRs for AY 2025-26 is being extended from September 15, 2025, to September 16, 2025.

In order to enable changes in the utilities, the CBDT said that the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12 am to 2.30 am on September 16.

The statement was issued at 11.48 pm on September 15, just 12 minutes before the portal was set to stop accepting returns. The extension in the ITR deadline came after chartered accountants (CAs) and individuals took to social media to complain about the glitches on the e-filing portal.

So far, the Income Tax Department has received more than 7 crore returns. Among them, over 6.03 crore are verified, and 4 crore are processed.

Taxpayers can file an ITR even after the due date, but that will be filed with a "belated return" label under Section 139 (4), and this will incur a late filing fee. Late filers can also face interest charges and delayed refunds.

The taxpayers who fail to file their return by the due date are at risk of attracting penalties of up to Rs 5,000 (capped at Rs 1,000 for individuals with income up to Rs 5 lakh), interest on outstanding tax dues, and delays in refund processing.
