Number Of Demant Accounts In India: The number of retail investors in the share market is rising, and according to Motilal Oswal's most recent data, the number of demat accounts has exceeded 15 crores for the first time. These numbers demonstrate retail investors' participation in the Indian stock market is expanding. The report reveals that with the addition of 31 lakh accounts in March, the total number of demat accounts increased to 15.1 crores. Last year in March 2023, the number stood at 11.4 crore.
CDSL maintained its market share in terms of total demat accounts and witnessed a month-on-month increase. However, NSDL experienced a year-on-year (YoY) decline of 390 basis points in total market share and 570 basis points in incremental demat accounts.
Discount Broker Performance
As per Et reported quoting Motilal Oswals, Zerodha reported 0.9% MoM growth in its subscriber base to 73 lakh. Its market share declined by 20bps to 17.9%. Upstox reported a 0.6% MoM growth in its subscriber count to 25 lakh. Its market share declined by 10bps to 6.2%. Grow's subscriber base increased by 3.8% MoM to 95 lakh, while its market share increased by 50bps to 23.4%.
The performance of traditional brokers
ICICI Securities (ISEC) reported a 1.3 percent decrease in its customer base to 18 lakhs and its Market share decreased by 15 basis points to 4.5 percent as well. IIFL Securities' customer base grew 0.3 percent month-on-month (MoM) to 4 lakh, with a market share of 1.1 percent.

The number of NSE's active clients
In March, the number of active clients on NSE increased by 1.8 percent MoM to more than 4 crore. Currently, the top five discount brokers account for 63.8 percent of NSE's total active clients, up from 59.9 percent in March 2023. However, NSE's overall average daily trading (ADTO) decreased by 7 percent MoM.
The total ADTO decreased by 5 percent MoM (but increased by 95 percent YoY) to Rs 4,61,00,000 crore. F&O ADTO decreased by 5 percent and cash ADTO decreased by 16 percent MoM.
BSE witnessed an increase of 8 percent MoM in total ADTO due to a rise in F&O volumes. BSE's market share in the total cash trading segment increased from 8.3 percent in February to 8.5 percent in March. Additionally, BSE's market share in the total option notional turnover segment and option premium turnover segment increased to 17.5 percent and 7.2 percent respectively in March. MCX's total volume increased to Rs 26,80,000 crore in March, with OPTFUT volume increasing by 5.7 percent to Rs 2.34 crore. Total ADTO volume increased by 10.3 percent month-on-month to Rs 13 lakh due to 11 percent growth in OPTFUT ADTO volume.
