Responding to media reports that the satellite-based tolling system will be launched from May 1, 2025 and will replace the current FASTag-based toll collection system, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Friday clarified that no decision has been taken on implementing the satellite-based tolling system across the country from May 1.
To enable smooth, unhindered movement of vehicles through toll plazas and reduce travel time, the ministry said in a statement that an 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-FASTag-based barrier-free tolling system' will be implemented at select toll plazas.
According to the statement, the advanced tolling system will combine ANPR technology, which identifies vehicles by reading their license plates, with the existing 'FASTag system', which uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) to reduce tolls.
Under this, vehicles will be charged based on identification through high-performance ANPR cameras and FAStag readers, without the need to stop at toll plazas.
In case of non-compliance, e-notices will be sent to the violators; if not paid, FASTag and other VAHAN-related fines will be suspended. It was earlier reported that a new satellite-based toll system will be implemented at toll plazas across the country.
