RBI News: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) informed that 98.15 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banking system and only Rs 6,577 crore worth of such notes are in the hands of the public. On May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India announced that itwass withdrawing Rs 2,000 notes from circulation.

The total value of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation, which stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of trade on May 19, 2023, when the currency notes were announced, has come down to Rs 6,577 crore at the close of trade on January 31. The RBI said in a statement. Thus, 98.1 cents of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation till May 19, 2,023 have returned since then.

The facility to deposit and/or exchange Rs 2,000 notes is available at all bank branches till October 7, 2023. However, this facility is still available at 19 issuing offices of the Reserve Bank. From October 9, 2023, RBI issuing offices are also accepting Rs. 2,000 notes from individuals and institutions for deposit into their bank accounts.

Most people can send Rs. 2,000 notes through India Post from any post office in the country to any issuing office of RBI and have them deposited into their bank accounts. 

There are 19 RBI offices where notes can be deposited/exchanged at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Rs. 2,000 note was introduced in November 2016 after the then Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 notes were demonetized.
