The Rupees close lower
The rupee depreciated by 5 paise to close at 83.49 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday due to foreign fund outflows and rising crude oil prices overseas. Foreign exchange traders said a weakening US currency and a firm trend in equity markets supported the local unit, even as investors remained cautious ahead of the RBI monetary policy decision to be announced on Friday.
In the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.40 and during the session, it touched an intra-day low of 83.50 against the greenback. The local unit finally closed at 83.49 (provisional) against the US currency, down 5 paise from its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee had gained 7 paise to close at 83.44 against the dollar.
