Stock Market Closing:  Domestic benchmark indices performed well as they surged over 1 percent against the previous close value. Sensex, The index of the top 30 shares on BSE, closed at 74,671.28, up by 941.12 points or 1.28 percent. While, Nifty 50, the index of the top 50 stocks on the NSE, ended trade at 22,643.40, up by 1 percent, or 223.45 points.

Leading the Sensex basket, ICICI Bank gained nearly 5% after the company on Saturday said its consolidated net profit rose 18.5% to Rs 11,672 crore in the March quarter, thanks to lower provisions.

State Bank of India, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement, Tata Consultancy Services, Bajaj Finance, and HDFC Bank were the other major gainers. HCL Technologies fell nearly 6% after the company reported a year-on-year rise in net profit to Rs 3,986 crore in the March quarter. Bajaj Finserv, ITC, and Wipro were the other laggards.

In Asian markets, Seoul, Shanghai, and Hong Kong closed in positive territory. European markets were trading in a mixed fashion. Wall Street ended Friday with gains.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude fell 0.51 percent to US$89.04 per barrel. According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 3,408.88 crore on Friday. The BSE benchmark Sensex fell 609.28 points or 0.82% to 73,730.16 on Friday. NSE Nifty fell 150.40 points or 0.67 percent to 22,419.95.

Rupee falls 10 paisa

The rupee lost 10 paise to close at 83.48 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday as investors remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision. Forex traders stated that positive sentiment in the domestic equity market and a decline in international crude oil prices offset the fall in the Indian currency.

The local unit opened lower at 83.39 at the interbank foreign exchange market and hit an intra-day low of 83.51 against the greenback during the session. The domestic currency finally closed at 83.48 (provisional) against the dollar, down 10 paise from its previous close.
