Stock Market:  Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty increased by more than 1% on Monday, driven by a rally in blue-chip stocks and the BJP's stellar performance in Maharashtra, which led the ruling Mahayuti alliance to a record number of seats. The BSE benchmark Sensex climbed 992.74 points, or 1.25 per cent, to close at 80,109.85, extending its gains from the previous day. During the session, it climbed to as high as 1,355.97 points, or 1.71 per cent, to 80,473.08.

The NSE Nifty rose 314.65 points, or 1.32 per cent, to 24,221.90. Larsen & Toubro,  Power Grid, Adani Ports, Reliance Industries, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, and Axis Bank were the top gainers in the 30-share Sensex pack.  Tech Mahindra, JSW Steel, Infosys, Asian Paints, Maruti,  and HCL Tech were among the laggards, on the other hand.

Zomato, an online food delivery behemoth, will join the benchmark BSE Sensex on December 23, replacing JSW Steel. This is part of the most recent restructuring announced by the BSE subsidiary Asia Index Pvt Ltd.

The BJP put up a stellar performance in Maharashtra on Saturday, winning a record number of seats to give the party-led ruling Mahayuti alliance a huge victory, while the Indian bloc returned to power thanks to the JMM's stellar performance in Jharkhand.

Seoul and Tokyo ended in positive territory, while Shanghai and Hong Kong ended in negative territory in Asian markets. European markets were trading in the green. The US markets ended in positive territory on Friday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude decreased by 0.40 per cent to $74.87 a barrel.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 1,278.37 crore on Friday. The BSE benchmark climbed 1,961.32 points, or 2.54 per cent, to close at 79,117.11 on Friday. The Nifty increased by 557.35 points, or 2.39 per cent, to 23,907.25.
