Stock Market Today: The domestic equity indices started in negative territory on Thursday amid persistent selling in IT stocks and profit booking in the Automobile sector.
Sensex, the 30-share index of BSE, opened with a gap-down at 83,968.43 against last session's closing of 84,233.64. The index extended the losing momentum further, falling over 600 points to a low of 83,795.65 in early trade.
Nifty50, the 50-share index of NSE, started the session at 25,906.70, down against last session's closing of 25,953.85.
In early trade, the indices were trading sharply lower. At around 9:43 AM, Sensex was trading at 83,833.18, down 400.46 points or 0.48 per cent. Nifty was doing business at 25,834.90, down 118.95 points or 0.46 per cent.
"Indian equity markets opened on a negative note and are trading with a weak bias, as sharp selling in IT stocks weighs on the benchmarks. Heavyweights such as Infosys, TCS, HCL Tech, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra are trading sharply lower, exerting early pressure on the indices and tempering broader sentiment," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.
The rise in crude oil prices also added to the cautious sentiment among investors, as per analysts.
Top Losers: Infosys, Tech Mahindra, TCS, HCL Technologies, Mahindra & Mahindra, Eternal, HDFC Bank, Asian Paints, Adani Ports, Maruti Suzuki, IndiGo, and Sun Pharma were trading lower from the 30-share Sensex basket.
Top Gainers: ICICI Bank, BEL, Bajaj Finance, SBI, Tata Steel, Titan, NTPC, Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro, and Bharti Airtel were trading higher.
