After India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) was introduced in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on Monday, the tally reached to seven countries where UPI will be accepted.
MyGovIndia, the Indian government's citizen engagement platform, shared a world map highlighting countries where Indians can make payments through UPI. According to the government, the countries that accept UPI payments are France, UAE, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bhutan and Nepal.

"UPI goes Global! India's Unified Payments Interface goes International with launches in Sri Lanka and Mauritius! An instant, one-stop payment interface showcases 'Make in India, Make for the World'," the government posted on X.
India has been active in expanding the reach of UPI globally. Last year, during the G20 summit India showcased the UPI system to delegates and they experienced real-time transactions over theeir phones as well.

UPI service launch in Sri Lanka, Mauritius
On Monday, UPI services were launched in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as bridging historical ties with modern digital technology.
Earlier, the payment system was officially launched on February 2 at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Bhutan is the first country to enable UPI transactions through the BHIM app, The UPI was originally launched in Bhutan on July 13, 2021, by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her Bhutanese counterpart Leonpo Namge Tshering.
What is UPI?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed UPI, an instant real-time payment system to facilitate inter-bank settlements using mobile phones. It combines multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application (any participating bank), multiple banking features, seamless fund routing and merchant payments under one hood.
