The average vegetarian thali became 10 percent more expensive in June due to a spike in the prices of onions, potatoes, and tomatoes, a report released on Friday said. However, the fall in broiler chicken prices has contributed to the decline in the cost of non-vegetarian meals, according to Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis's monthly report titled 'Roti Rice Price'.
The cost of the vegetarian thali, which includes roti, vegetables (onion, tomato, and potato), rice, curd, and salad, rose by 10 percent to Rs 29.4 per plate in June from Rs 26.7 in the corresponding period last year, it said, adding that it was higher than Rs 27.8 in May 2024.

The overall increase in the prices of the vegetable thali is attributed to the 30 percent jump in tomato prices, 59 percent rise in potato prices, and 46 percent increase in onion prices.
In the case of onions, the arrivals declined due to a significant fall in the acreage under rabi crops, while potatoes witnessed a production decline due to unseasonal rainfall in March.
About the rise in tomato prices, it said the virus spread in summer crops in the key growing regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh due to rising temperatures resulting in a 35 percent decline in tomato arrivals year-on-year.
In addition, there has been a 13 percent increase in rice prices due to a fall in the area under cultivation leading to lower arrivals, while pulses prices rose by 22 percent due to a dry spell in the key kharif months, the report said.
In the case of the non-vegetarian thali, which has the same ingredients except the dal is replaced with chicken, the price came down to Rs 58 in June from Rs 60.5 in the same period last year but was higher compared to the previous month's price of Rs 55.9 per thali.
The report said non-vegetarian thali costs declined due to a fall of around 14 percent year-on-year in broiler chicken prices, higher supply, and lower feed cost compared to last year. The report said the rise in the prices of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals in comparison to the previous month was largely due to the increase in the prices of vegetables.
