The Calcutta High Court has ordered the immediate arrest of two men, including Delhi Capitals cricketer Abhishek Porel, in connection with a case involving the alleged rape of a medical student and blackmail using her private photographs.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed the police at Hooghly’s Magra Police Station to arrest the accused and seize all their electronic devices without delay. The court said the devices must be recovered to prevent the alleged photographs from being shared further.
The case was brought before the High Court after the survivor claimed she was sexually exploited by one of the accused under the false promise of a romantic relationship. She also alleged that her private photographs were secretly taken, circulated online and later used to blackmail her.
According to the complaint, the images are still believed to be stored on the accused’s electronic devices. Although an FIR has been registered at Magra Police Station under multiple legal provisions, the devices have not yet been recovered.
Appearing for the survivor, lawyers Randev Sengupta and Akash Gangopadhyay told the court that the delay in recovering the devices could lead to the photographs being circulated further. They also alleged that the accused had used a similar pattern with several other women by gaining their trust, collecting their private photographs and later blackmailing them. The lawyers said they had placed material before the court to support these claims.
No lawyer appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearing.
The police informed the court that efforts to trace and arrest the accused are underway. The High Court has directed the investigating officers to file a detailed status report on the action taken by August 11. The matter will be heard again on the same day.
